MSG Announces Distinguished Speaker Series

Mercyhurst Student Government has a tradition of bringing a Distinguished Speaker Series to Mercyhurst College. This year the speakers were all chosen to benefit and interest different groups on campus and the Mercyhurst community at large.

The MSG Distinguished Speaker Series strives to bring in the best speakers that will be entertaining, as well as academically and culturally enriching.

The first speaker of the series Jeff Lieberman made a presentation on Tuesday, January 12. The schedule of remaining speakers is as follows:

• Ed Miller, Wednesday, February 3 at 8:15 p.m. in Walker Recital Hall
• Gary Telgenhoff, Tuesday, March 16 at 8:15 p.m. in Walker Recital Hall
• Raymond Ablack, Tuesday, March 23 at 8:15 p.m. in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center
• Jeff Havens, Wednesday, April 14 at 8:15 p.m. in Taylor Little Theatre

MSG and Circle K team up to host Relay for Life

Mercyhurst Student Government and Circle K are teaming up to host Relay for Life at Mercyhurst College to benefit the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life brings together more than 3.5 million people in communities across the country to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and to fight back and put an end to cancer.

The event will take place on May 1, 2010 on Mercyhurst Main campus from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.. Team registrations are now being accepted. Teams can have up to 15 members, and each member is asked to raise $25. Each individual who can raise $100 or more will receive a free t-shirt.

Annual MSG Coin Drive to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation

Mercyhurst Student Government’s annual coin drive is underway. All proceeds from this year’s coin drive will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a non-profit organization that enriches the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work.

Donation jars are located in the bookstore, coffee bar, PAC box office, Preston mailroom, Docucenter, Egan Dining Hall, One Card Office, Laker Inn, Marion Shane Multicultural Center, and the MSG Senator Office on the second floor of the Student Union. The coin drive will run until Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

Annual MSG Tree Lighting Ceremony to be Held on December 6

Erie, Pa. – November 30, 2009 – Mercyhurst Student Government’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union. Please join us in continuing MSG tradition to celebrate the holiday season with cookies, hot chocolate and caroling.

Keynote speaker Dr. Gerard Tobin will ring in holiday spirit before the commencement of caroling and the lighting of the Christmas tree outside of the Student Union.

Christmas trees embellished by 17 RSCOs will be on display during the event for the Mercyhurst community. Voting for the tree decorating competition will take place before the lighting of the tree. The winning RSCO will win $100 for their club or organization.

Mercyhurst College/EMTA Partnership: Success in Numbers

Erie, Pa. – August 21, 2009 – Mercyhurst College, Mercyhurst Student Government and the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority (EMTA) combined forces in 2008 to provide students with quality transportation in Erie. The existing MSG shuttle was replaced with an EMTA bus with double the capacity and many more destinations for Mercyhurst students who are able to ride for free simply by showing their OneCard.

EMTA recently released ridership numbers from the 2008-09 academic year, as follows:

MSG Approves new Treasurer

Erie, Pa. – May 18, 2009 – On Monday, May 18, 2009 the MSG Senate approved the newly appointed MSG Treasurer Patrick Garvin for the 2009 – 10 academic year.

After receiving a letter of resignation by elected MSG Treasurer Adam Kostik, the MSG Executive Board sent a letter to eligible candidates for the Treasurer position. The Executive Board interviewed and selected a candidate and presented their recommendation to the Senate for approval.

Patrick is a sophomore majoring in Accounting with a minor in Computer Systems. He served on MSG as a Freshman Representative during the 2007 – 08 academic year.

2009 – 2010 Student Activities Council Executive Board Approved

Erie, Pa. – On Monday, May 4, 2009, the Mercyhurst Student Government (MSG) Senate approved the newly appointed Student Activities Council Executive Board for the 2009 – 2010 academic year.

Twelve students applied for 10 positions and went through an application and interview process. It is with the recommendation of SAC Chair Cerissa Lynch, along with the MSG Executive Board that the following students were appointed positions on the SAC Executive Board and approved by the MSG Senate:

Springfest Ticket Policy

Erie, Pa. – April 29, 2009 – Mercyhurst Student Government and Student Activities Council are bringing Third Eye Blind to campus on Friday, May 8, 2009. The concert will take place in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center at 8 p.m.

Free student tickets will be distributed as indicated below. A valid undergraduate Mercyhurst student ID is required to receive a ticket. Students may receive one ticket, and each student must pick up his or her own ticket.

Traditional Undergraduate Main Campus Students: Tickets will be made available beginning Friday, May 1st through Thursday, May 7th between the hours of 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-7 p.m. in the Student Union. Due to popular interest and the limited number of tickets (1500 maximum capacity in the MAC), we are only offering traditional undergraduate main campus students a ticket on a first come, first serve basis initially. Once the concert tickets are gone, a sign will be placed in the Student Union.

Adult and Graduate Main Campus Students: If there are still tickets remaining on Wednesday, May 6th only then will tickets be offered to adult and graduate students at the main campus between the hours of 11am-2pm and 5pm-7pm in the Student Union. Once the concert tickets are gone, a sign will be placed in the Student Union.

Faculty, Staff and Administrators at Main Campus: If there are still tickets remaining on Thursday, May 7th only then will tickets be offered to faculty, staff and administrators at the main campus between the hours of 11am-2pm and 5pm-7pm in the Student Union. Once the concert tickets are gone, a sign will be placed in the Student Union.

Alumni, Guests and Non-Main Campus Students and Personnel: Tickets are NOT available to the Springfest concert.

In addition to ticket sales we will also be selling Springfest t-shirts for $5 at the table!! Please pick up your tickets for the biggest event of the year!!

Please note that students will be asked to show their Mercyhurst ID cards upon entry to the concert. Anyone not having proper Mercyhurst College ID will not be allowed to enter.

Students Elect 2009-10 MSG Senate

Erie, Pa. – April 28, 2009 – On Monday, April 27, 2009 Mercyhurst Student Government approved and swore in a new Senate for the 2009 – 2010 academic year.

Nine class senators representing the sophomore, junior and senior classes were approved, as well as nine senators representing Mercyhurst’s academic schools.

SAC Spicing It Up

Student Activities Council has kept it busy during past couple of weeks with Spring Charity Ball, Last Comic Standing, Open Skate Night, and free Of- Campus Trip to Chicago.

The annual Spring Charity Ball was held on Friday, April 3rd in the Masonic Temple. Theme was Black and White Tie Affair. Tickets were $10 per student which included DJ, transportation and dinner consisting of salmon, stuffed chicken breast, pasta, cheddar mashed potatoes, salad and desserts. All the $1500 money from the tickets went to the Mercy Beyond Borders, helping women and children in need.

Then the following weekend SAC organized an interesting event which received great feedback from students. Last Comic Standing was hosted by comedian Tony Deyo and 6 students competed for the votes from the audience. Steve Cameron won 1st place and $150, while Devon Swanson came in second with $50 prize.

That same night 150 students went on a free trip to the windy city, Chicago. Students who stayed could enjoy final sense of the winter during the last Open Skate of the year.
